Solzhenitsyns Warning to the West Essay - 701 Words
Warning to the West is a criticism of both the west and his own nation. Solzhenitsyn expresses his deep pain and frustration toward the nations of the world for ignoring the atrocities and even aiding the Soviet Communist Government in which he hails from. Solzhenitsyn expresses his slanted view of a perfect Dà ©tente and what he feels should be a true Marxist state by showing some of the atrocities claimed by the Soviet regime. He expresses to the United States that nations can no longer stand by and let communism take over the world. Solzhenitsyn complains about the western allies supporting and aligning with the USSR. He offers explanations to why the allies decided to aid USSR against Nazi Germany. However, although his arguments areâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This sounds awful familiar in America today. Perhaps, Solzhenitsyn was warning the US to not forget about the past for those who fail to learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. Solzhenitsyn calls the US to stand u p to Communism, not to give in to all its demands. A strong wall will force the Communists to back down. ââ¬Å"Never Negotiate with Terroristsâ⬠, Solzhenitsyn would say that all Communisms are a part of a Terrorist network. He delves into some of the horrific events that happened in Russia, events that he warns could happen in the West and in the United States. The West needs to heed Solzhenitsyns warning, and we need to find the courage to defend what is good and great about democratic freedoms. He does not claim that democracy is perfect, but he does believe that it is the best system that provides liberty and freedom to all peoples who live in the system. His warning is to remind us that anyone can fall into the communist /socialist trap the moment that nations let their guard down and let go of their values and morals. Solzhenitsyn explains that what has happened in Russia is not a one-time thing that world history is at a turning point. The world will enter into a crisis of apocalyptic proportions. This movement will not just be a political crisis but a

Sexual orientation is just one factor of inequality in our culture, and I will discuss here how it effects jobâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This theory looks deeper at a personal level of the way one views their self-worth and position in society (Macionis, 2015). Social stratification is the way in which our society places people into categories based on certain principles. Principles such as social position in a society, and class standing. Itââ¬â¢s based on a hierarchy of what one has and of inequalities, in addition to beliefs represented with in that society. We see these inequalities in all aspects of our culture, from wealth and occupation, to race and gender. Sexual orientation outside of the norm is a large bases of inequality in our culture, leaving people debating whether to reveal their sexual preferences especially in the work place (Macionis, 2015, p 246-251). 25 Inspiring Quotes about Writing
Writing may be one of the most rewarding ââ¬â and most frustrating ââ¬â activities in the history of mankind. Few other callings result in as much crumpled paper, snapped pencils, frayed nerves and all-nighters. Writing has also given us some of the most inspirational quotes imaginable. Here, weve collected 25 quotes to give you the motivation and inspiration you need to finish your project, even if it takes all night. Getting Started Every writer has dealt with writers block and new writers can find the process of simply starting to be difficult. Since beginning can be difficult for even seasoned writers, much advice has been given on how to take the plunge and begin telling your story. There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed. (Ernest Hemingway) ââ¬Å"The scariest moment is always just before you start.â⬠(Stephen King) ââ¬Å"The first draft of anything is shit.â⬠(Ernest Hemingway) ââ¬Å"The secret of getting ahead is getting started.â⬠(Mark Twain) ââ¬Å"Begin at the beginning,â⬠the King said gravely, ââ¬Å"and go on till you come to the end: then stop.â⬠(Lewis Carroll) You dont have to be great to get started, but you have to get started to be great. (Les Brown) As we can see, the best authors in the world understand that beginning to write is as simple as it is difficult ââ¬â one must simply begin. Choosing the Right Words Another common theme in writing is the eternal struggle to find just the right words and phrases. Many times writers throw around a number of words, searching for the one that fits like a missing puzzle piece. Rough drafts were made to be reworked and this is where a writers vocabulary and talent really come into play. Writing a scene requires the same dexterity and skilled hand as paining a picture, creating a sculpture or any other creative endeavor. ââ¬Å"The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug.â⬠(Mark Twain) ââ¬Å"One day I will find the right words, and they will be simple.â⬠(Jack Kerouac) ââ¬Å"Dont tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.â⬠(Anton Chekhov) ââ¬Å"Words can be like X-rays if you use them properly theyââ¬â¢ll go through anything. You read and youââ¬â¢re pierced.â⬠(Aldous Huxley) ââ¬Å"If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it. Or, if proper usage gets in the way, it may have to go. I canââ¬â¢t allow what we learned in English composition to disrupt the sound and rhythm of the narrative.â⬠(Elmore Leonard) There is no great writing, only great rewriting. (Justice Brandeis) On Inspiration Creative inspiration is perhaps one of the most ephemeral things in the world. Inspiration can come from anywhere and creativity is, at best, a fickle mistress. This interest in creativity and the creative process has been with man since the earliest times. The ancient Greeks had dozens of Muses dedicated to various forms of the arts and science. The Muses are goddesses representing different arts and sciences in Greek mythology. They are the daughters of Mnemosyne and Zeus. Kalliope ââ¬â the muse of epic poetry Euterpe ââ¬â the muse of music and lyric poetry Erato ââ¬â the muse of lyric/love poetry Melpomene ââ¬â the muse of tragedy Thalia ââ¬â the muse of comedy Although established Muses of the past are rarely referred to now, their spirit lives on. Today, the creative process may be seen differently, but the inspiration and frustration remain the same. ââ¬Å"You never have to change anything you got up in the middle of the night to write.â⬠(Saul Bellow) ââ¬Å"Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.â⬠(Scott Adams) Inspiration is a guest that does not willingly visit the lazy. (Pyotr Tchaikovsky) ââ¬Å"Creativity is knowing how to hide your sourcesâ⬠(Albert Einstein) Inspiration is wonderful when it happens, but the writer must develop an approach for the rest of the time. (Leonard Bernstein) Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart. (William Wordsworth) Your intuition knows what to write, so get out of the way. (Ray Bradbury) I dont know where my ideas come from, but I know where they come to. They come to my desk, and if Im not there, they go away again. (Philip Pullman) On the Writing Life Its often said that artists are a special breed, and writers are no different. The writing life isnt for everyone and, for those who feel the calling, taking the journey is sometimes difficult. Writers have discussed their methods, their inspirations and their styles, but here we get a glimpse into what truly drives them to follow the writers life. ââ¬Å"You must stay drunk on writing so reality cannot destroy you.â⬠(Ray Bradbury) ââ¬Å"I know some people might think it odd unworthy even for me to have written a cookbook, but I make no apologies. The U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins thought I had demeaned myself by writing poetry for Hallmark Cards, but I am the peoples poet so I write for the people.â⬠(Maya Angelou) ââ¬Å"We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master.â⬠(Ernest Hemingway) I write for the same reason I breathe because if I didnt, I would die. (Isaac Asimov) You fail only if you stop writing. (Ray Bradbury)

A State of Mind
A State of Mind A State of Mind is a 2003 documentary film intended for adult audiences. It was written and produced by Daniel Gordon. The film which has won various awards across the world focuses on the day to day life of North Koreans as dictated by the prevailing political regime.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on A State of Mind specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The film brings to focus issues of totalitarianism, oppression, suppression and a subjectââ¬â¢s admissibility to such subjective leadership. It gives the concept emphasis through a critical look at the ordinary lives of two little girls. It offers to the reader a political aspect of a country and its influence on other perspectives such as family and social life of subjects. North Korea is a nation that adheres to communist ideals even in these contemporary times. Under the leadership of Kim Jong Il, this nation is in the process of gradual growth towards becoming a sup erpower. It is separated from the rest of the world and has very little links with China and Russia, her immediate neighbors. It is also completely separated from South Korea. Daniel Gordon films the activities of a national event, the Pyongyang Mass Games. This is an annual event in North Korea whereby gymnasts, dancers, athletes and musician come together and stage a spectacular performance. The major theme of this event revolves around the portrayal of the ideals of socialism and patriotism by the citizens. It is dedicated in honor of Kim Jong Ilââ¬â¢s father and former leader, Kim II Sung as well as to North Koreaââ¬â¢s glorious revolution as indicated by Jeon; ââ¬Å"Pyongyangââ¬â¢s â⬠¦ lack political ambitions and give blind support and unconditional loyalty to their leaderâ⬠(Jeon 761). The film discusses on the daily lifestyles of two young girls and that of the people around them, a livelihood quite unknown to the rest of the world especially those from th e west. This movie can be termed as one revealing the political aspect of North Korea in an unusual way, sports. It is not only an ambiguous story with regard to Korean culture, but also an ambivalent display of the countryââ¬â¢s political regime. One notes that the movie is brought out in such a mild humanistic perspective with little or no exaggerations of religion, language, war or pleasures of the world such as smoking or sex.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? This makes the movie attractive to a large audience whereby criticism based on the above becomes negligible. Children who watch this movie can only be entertained by the graceful display of art and artistic movement but may not be in a position to understand the historical or political aspects of North Korea as they are the intentions of the Producer (French 35-36). With prior knowledge of how closed a country North Korea is; one wonders how Daniel Gordon and his team got the permission to film this documentary movie. Perhaps it is because the film does not draw any conclusion or judgment. Just as in other movies touching on the Soviet socialist states, it is aimed at presenting a leaderââ¬â¢s ideal of totalitarianism to his subjects. However, the ambiguity of the film is seen in the way that the characters are brought out. The opinion of the state of affairs may vary from one viewer to the other. While some will be of the opinion that the girls are happy during these routines, others may interpret this as oppression and repression. This is supported by Kohââ¬â¢s statement that the people of North Korea are expected to be committed and willing to work hard at all times ââ¬Å"no matter how arduous and frustrating it may beâ⬠(Koh 146). The two girls together with many others practice on a daily basis for this great event. One of the girls comes from a working class family. This is evidenced by the fact that her father operates heavy machinery. The other girlââ¬â¢s father is an intellectual specializing in physics. The youngstersââ¬â¢ notion of zeal and commitment is seen in this practice session whereby their intentions are solely on pleasing the Great leader. Even though most part of the movie is silent, the creativity is spectacular with choreographersââ¬â¢ efforts being very conspicuous. Some of the groups do not make it to the final list (French 31-32).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on A State of Mind specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The movie takes another perspective where it interviews families of those involved in the practice. It is a revelation of the high esteem that they hold their leader with and the hatred they have for what they call the United States Imperialism. For instan ce, flashbacks of the Korean War and the subsequent economist discussion reveal that the war was the resultant of communism. However, most of the Koreans blame it on imperialism of the west. The leader upholds communist ideals and perspectives which are basically non-spiritual. However, a little alteration from these ideals is seen when he sets aside a holy mountain for annual prayers and visitation. (Koh 145-147). Totalitarianism is seen in this event in many ways. As the performers entertain the crowd, they give all they are to please humanity. They are not supposed to show any aspect of individualism. It is the leader who is supposed to be celebrated as a leader, idol and an individual. Even though he does not show up for the event, his idiosyncrasies must be met; he must be celebrated in absentia. However, the feelings of the Koreans towards this act of hero worship are not revealed. They adore their Great leader in extreme ways that almost everything is named after him. Looking at it from a western perspective, it would be a sort of brainwashing that results into ill-treatment and misleading of the citizens by their leader. But there are thoughts that run through oneââ¬â¢s mind; who would not sublime the individual and work to perfection for the sake of his own country? But are the Koreans celebrating the nation or the leader? But from the beginning, the ââ¬Å"Koreans have been socialized to obey and defer to authority figuresâ⬠thus it is a norm to them (Koh148). Degradation and oppression of humanity is seen with regard to who gets to perform at the all-important event. The two girls in the story come from the higher class of society and are accorded respect.Advertising Looking for essay on art and design? Let's see if we can help you! The lower class citizens are not that lucky; they are forced to live in concentration camps and are starved to death. They constitute the poor and the peasants (Kim 285). What is portrayed in A State of Mind is a society whose lifestyle, social and political inclination is different from what westerners view as a liberal state. It is a portrayal of a country where the concept of the good of the whole supersedes the needs of the individual. The organization and color in this documentary serves to display the commitment and efforts of the citizens to please their leader. When one observes how happy and excited the citizens are doing, it makes one wonder whether they do not see the odds of this socialist ideal. This film is basically understood with regard to oneââ¬â¢s political perspective. If watched by a liberal, then it serves to show that if one chooses to be happy and contented, s/he can be regardless of the political regime prevailing in their country. For the communists, it reveals the subordination of an individual just for the sake of the nation. It is a great documentary which can be enjoyed by both sports and political enthusiasts. Lecture review Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Lecture review - Essay Example He was determined to be someone who would help develop the society (Perdue). Dr. James studied hard to become a teacher and coach. The disability did not prevent him from performing his duties because he received the award of the best teacher of the week at the Fox 17 awards. He also became the top teacher during the 2002. He showed great ambition and demonstrated that one should not give up their goals when he received his doctorate degree from Tennessee State University. He still held on to his passion, and this awarded him with the title Coach of the Year for both the years 2000 and 2006. Receiving the Dr. Ramer Award in 1991, and Jo Andrews in 1995 showed that he was able to set aside all challenges and adversities in order to succeed both as a teacher and as a coach. Narrating his life experiences made one realize the scope of the challenges that existed in the world. That all people, in one way or another, faced challenges, but they should not be a reason to back down (Perdue). Dr. James Perdue was very clear about his mission in the society. He would help others in passing through strategies so that they would emerge as survivors of the tragedy. He was very specific that it is everyoneââ¬â¢s responsibility to help each other in times of tragedy, and even before it occurs. We should be a source of encouragement and motivation, hence acting as pillars that support the hurting (Perdue). We, who pass through the struggles of life, should find the strength of passing through all the tragedies. This enabled me to realize that as much as our friends are there to support us; we ought to encourage ourselves and uplift our spirits because todayââ¬â¢s tragedies should not affect our tomorrow. We, therefore, ought to live each day to our fullest. We should hold on to the hope and the determination that we can beat all odds whatever the tragedy may be, or whenever it may strike (Perdue). Passion should, therefore, be our driving force through the tragic

Public Anger And The Occupy Wall Street Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Public Anger And The Occupy Wall Street - Essay Example The idea was obviously to goad and move the government and to convince them that people the limit of patience of a docile public has been reached (Moynihan, 17 March 2012). The OWS movement was a continuation of the anger felt by a frustrated public across the world. This was seen in the Tahrir square of Egypt, the Arab Spring movement of Saudi Arabia, protests in the UK, Spain, Greece, India, Pakistan, Libya, and many other nations. In many places, these movements have succeeded in bringing in some level of change. In Egypt, the President Mr. Mubarak was forced to resign, in the Middle East, changes were brought in the manner in which people were governed, in Greece, the government was forced to change its stance on the Euro. In a way, such movements have brought in changes though not to the extent those were planned. These mass-based movements can be traced to Mahatma Gandhi who used non-violent protests to throw out the British from India. China had the Tiananmen Square protests that ended in a massacre. Such movements become successful when there is a mass-based movement and more people in different cities join the movement. Zit must be a movement by the masses and not by a few. Some discipline, leadership and an agenda are needed else the movement becomes anarchy and lewd acts, violence and anti-social elements take over the movement. It is interesting to see how the common person on the street is affected. When such protestors block roads and they do not allow traffic to pass, people cannot go to work, to school, and the ill cannot go to the hospitals and so on. When traffic is blocked, the government machinery grinds to a halt. Police can be called in but they can do little when the number of protestors is in thousands.
